Rules regulating navigation within the Port

During navigation within the port vessels must:

  1. keep to the center of the canal proceeding at emergency speed so as to be able to act appropriately and efficiently in order to avoid collision and to hault within an appropriate distance with reference to the prevailing conditions.
  2. keep the anchors ready to be casted if need be;
  3. keep the sails lowered and navigate using the motor or tow-rope;
  4. signal using acoustic signals stating their presence in the canal in case of fog;
  5. reduce speed keeping the propellers at the lowest speed possible, especially near the approaches on which tankers with dangerous cargos operate (PIR, ENEL, ANIC, SAROM, DECORA former Total);
  6. fortify the chimneys or the combustion tail pipes through efficient spark catchers when passing or manoeuvering in proximity to the type of approaches mentioned above and when tankers are being docked: to such aim the Master or the one responsible for the vessel must personally ensure that there are no sparks released from the chimneys or from the tail pipes;
  7. recall with four short hisses, when necessary, the attention of their crew (the type of vessels refered to in paragraph 2 of the Regulations governing Navigation, Anchorage, Approaches and precedence between those and the floating ships within the port of Ravenna) when navigating in the Canal;
  8. avoid, in accordance with good steering requirements, keeping the propellers in motion in the case of crossing or surpassing of vessels (refered to in paragraph 2 of the regulations mentioned above), along the same stretch and necessary in order to safeguard smaller vessels;
  9. to avoid casting anchor where submerged pipelines and cables exist: the above-mentioned are indicated by sign-boards on the sides of the Canal featuring an overturned anchor on a white background.

Rules regulating mooring

During approaches vessels must:

  1. moor without impeding the transit or manoeuvring of other vessels;
  2. carry out mooring using suitable elastic cables at least two to the stern and two to the prow (in addition to the prow and stern spring lines), so as not to create any danger or damage with the sudden movement as a result of the normal transit of vessels in the area overlooking the actual approach;
  3. not keep mooring cables out for long and adjust them in accordance with the procedures governing the loading/unloading operations and tide variance so that they are at all times well hauled in;
  4. pay attention to passing or manoeuvring vessels nearby ensuring that:
    • mooring under the above mentioned rules, is properly carried out
    • trade operations which are in progress do not create any danger to personnel
  5. avoid areas with bridges, footbridges or barges and personnel with the intent of working alongside when other vessels are in transit or manoeuvring nearby;
  6. hold the anchors in such position so as not to create any danger or damage;
  7. listen in to VHF radio on channel 12 (156.600Mhz.) for the reception of possible danger or emergency messages transmitted from Ravenna's Harbour Master's Office (remembering however, that calls to the Harbour Master's Office may be made on channel 16 (156.800 Mhz.);
  8. place suitable daytime and night-time traffic signs in the event that the mooring cables or rigging on the edge obstruct re-entry and represent danger to vehicles or persons in the vicinity;
  9. floaters and vessels, which for some reason have had their propellers rendered useless and which must stop in roadstead, are obliged to seek continuous assistance from a tug of adequate power.

Conduct of navigation within port limits

  1. The vessel navigating along the Candiano Canal has precedence over the ships moving from an approach, over those coming from the lateral canals and over the "ferry" that provides the service between Marina di Ravenna and Porto Corsini.
  2. Tanker vessels carrying inflammable substances cannot cross or surpass other vessels, unless at the breakwater entrance, on the San Vitale Coast and the stretch of the Canal between the Trattaroli coast and the mouth of the Piombone.
  3. Vessels greater than 150 T.S.L. or wider than 12 cannot cross or overtake each other in the following areas of the Port:
    • within the Watchman wharves
    • in proximity to the ferry crossing
    • in proximity to the Marina di Ravenna Curve
    • between Darsena San Vitale and Darsena di Cittą
    • in the Piombone Canal, where permission is given to the local traffic crossing and to the off-shore support/link platforms
  4. Vessels connected to the port services and those no greater than 150 T.S.L. or 12 meters of width, can cross and overtake each other provided they proceed with particular caution.
